![]() COMPANIES & FINANCE UK: Bandwidth war set for London NEWS DIGEST
Financial Times; Dec 18, 2000
Bandwidth war set for London A telephony bandwidth war seems set to break out in London between rival exchanges offering telecoms operators convenience and lower costs in the buying and selling of transmission capacity. Arbinet-thexchange, a US-based capacity exchange, opened hostilities at the beginning of the month with the launch of a London connection point for its New York switching centre. It says UK and European operators will be able to buy and sell capacity with other members of the exchange. Arbinet reckons the total global market for bandwidth in 2000, measured in minutes, was worth Dollars 706bn (Pounds 480bn) and is growing rapidly. In the latest move, Arbinet has secured an agreement with GE Capital Commercial, the financial services group, to provide the exchange with global credit risk management. It said the agreement with GE Capital would enable sellers to avoid the risk of bad debt while accelerating cash flow for sellers and improving the range of payment timing options for buyers.
