Arbinet Launches Hong Kong Exchange

2008-11-17

By David Hamilton, theWHIR.com

November 17, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Global voice and IP communications firm Arbinet (www.arbinet.com) has expanded its IP services with a new Hong Kong IP exchange, which is now operational and ready to connect Internet service providers with customers.

According to an announcement last week, New Jersey-based Arbinet has a new exchange point located at the MEGA-i Data Center, providing customers in Asia with a cost-effective way to connect with ISPs. Arbinet’s simple, scalable solution for quality IP transit supply provides service providers such as ISPs, VoIP operators, ASPs and content providers the ability to directly connect to multiple global and regional Tier 1 ISPs such as Telekom Malaysia.

Its first group of buyers, Arbinet estimates, will be connected in Hong Kong by the end of the year. Arbinet’s exchange promises simple IP supply management, network cost savings and optimized global Internet routing performance (routing traffic based on near real-time quality metrics of jitter, latency and packet loss rather than traditional "best effort" Internet routing). The company is also currently expanding the reach of this exchange to customers in the HKCOLO Sinofavour data center to be completed by December.

Unlike traditional exchanges, Arbinet’s lets buyers purchase IP transit from multiple suppliers through a single connection, contract and bill, making it a "one-stop shop" for paid peering and IP transit from ISPs selling locally on Arbinet’s Hong Kong exchange or its Los Angeles exchange.

"Hong Kong has emerged as the second largest Internet hub in Asia and is a vital gateway to China," TeleGeography (www.telegeography.com) research director Alan Mauldin said in a statement. "Our research has indicated that Intra-Asian Internet traffic has grown nearly 65 percent annually between 2004 and 2008." Global communications research firm Telegeography has found that Arbinet’s new Hong Kong IP platform will meet a growing demand in East Asia.

This expansion is part of Arbinet’s core business objective of global growth, that will be used to offer voice and IP services throughout the world.
